Pueblo Expands Swim Programs, Enrollment Surges Across All Ages

Pueblo's municipal aquatic centres recorded a 22 percent jump in group swim class registrations between January and June 2026, according to city recreation department figures released this week.
The increase coincides with expanded operating hours at facilities that stayed open later into the evenings after a 2025 city budget adjustment added $180,000 for staff and maintenance. Residents cite the need for low-impact exercise options that accommodate multiple generations in one location, especially along corridors such as Northern Avenue and Abriendo Avenue where many families live within walking distance of public pools.
Programs serve every age group at two main sites
The Bessemer Pool on Orman Avenue runs parent-toddler water acclimation sessions on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, while the same venue hosts adult lap-swim intervals from 6 to 8 p.m. on weekdays. Across town, the Pueblo City Park Aquatic Centre on Pueblo Boulevard offers a stroke-refinement clinic for teens on Saturday afternoons and a water-aerobics series for adults over 55 that meets three times weekly in the therapy pool. Both locations also coordinate with the Pueblo Parks and Recreation Department to run a joint junior lifeguard program that begins its next eight-week cycle on July 20.
Costs and schedules remain stable for now
A single eight-week session costs $68 for residents inside city limits and includes access to two coached practices per week. The city recreation office reported that 1,142 individuals had signed up for summer aquatic classes by July 1, compared with 934 at the same point last year. Free community swim nights continue on the first Friday of each month at both pools, drawing an average of 340 participants per event according to gate counts. Registration for the fall term opens August 15 through the city's online portal or at the recreation desk located at 230 S. Union Avenue.
